Question: What's the difference between Intel and AMD?
Answer: Intel and AMD both make processors. The processor is the brain of your computer - the most important part. Basically, Intel is more popular with big computer companies such as Dell or HP. One is not better than the other, there are different types of Intel and AMD processors, you get what you pay for. If you want to build yourself a computer, the best choice is AMD because they provide a product just like Intels, but for a much cheaper price. You should also keep in mind that MHz is NOT the way to look for a fast processor. AMD uses a rating system, 1800+ being a low end processor and 3800+ being AMD's high end processor as of July, 2005. The only true way to find out how 'fast' a processor runs is to look at benchmarks. You can find more hardware info including a benchmark chart listing most processors at http://www.tomshardware.com
When comparing AMD to Intel.. Consider the following:
You have a bathtub of water [data] which you need to transfer to another bathtub.
An Intel CPU [Central Processing Unit] uses a cup and goes really fast.
An AMD CPU uses a bucket and goes slower then the Intel CPU.
In this fashion, an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ [1.453 GHz] can be equivalent to an Intel Pentium 4 2.2Ghz [or even higher]
